Oklahoma City KWTV, OETA, and PAX News

Update Thursday 3 January @ 10:34 – Bad News! I emailed KWTV and found out that the tower crew that was supposed to be here after January is delayed at another project and cannot leave until it is finished. So KWTV is using the time to evaluate different vendors to provide the equipment. Apparently the prices for the equipment has been unstable since there is an increasing number of vendors coming into the market. However even though KWTV are still looking at equipment they are still only going to broadcast in 4:3 Standard Definition 480i. What a waste of time and resources since CBS does 16:9 High Definition 1080i. I even thought they already had the equipment. Also KWTV would not be surprised is they just even make the FCC May deadline. I also asked if DirecTV has contacted KWTV about carrying them as part of their local channels lineup. DirecTV carries local channels for some of the bigger markets.

Update Friday 21 December @ 10:13 – I found out that the transmission line is now about 1300-1400 feet up the tower now. The crew is leaving for the holidays and a new crew will come in after the first to finish the job.

Update Thursday 17 December @ 18:55 – I emailed KWTV today about how was the antenna install going, unfortunately there are been no progress on the vertical line installation on the tower because of weather and high winds.

Update Wednesday 06 December @ 13:01 -The tower crew had to leave this past week to get a Springfield station back on the air. It was the Fox affiliate. They may be back tomorrow or Monday at the latest. We’ve had so much wind that there isn’t much vertical progress being made so they’re doing all the horizontal runs.

Update Thursday 20 November @ 10:03 – I got an email from KWTV and the antenna was delivered yesterday. They haven’t been able to work on the transmission line for the past few days because of high winds.

Update Thursday 15 November @ 16:01 – I got an instant message from someone close to the installation of the transmission line for KWTV, KETA, and KOPX. They have about 800 – 1000′ of transmission line stacked. However, the final height is 1600′ feet and they still have to put up the antennas so they’re still quite a ways off from completion.

I got an email from an engineer at KWTV (CBS) here in OKC.

The transmission line is being installed as we speak. KETA and KOPX are also going up now. Since they are putting up three stations at the same time it’s going a little slower than normal. They will put some up on their web site newsok.com when we start broadcasting in digital.

Thanks for the information. Care to speculate on when they might begin testing?

I have no idea. I just know what KWTV tells me. They are shooting for January 2002. They said it would take longer because they are doing 3 transmission lines at the same time. If anyone out there has any more information we would love to here it.
