I have been following the KWTV and KOTV situation for quite a while. Don’t look for any HiDef from KWTV or KOTV for a few years until management changes their attitude regarding HD.

Now KWTV has not had its DTV construction permit approved yet by the FCC. Apparently they are the only station in Oklahoma that has an application on file with the FCC that has not been approved. They cannot even broadcast a test signal until the application is approved.

KWTV plan is to build a fiber optic from their station to the tower at 122nd and Kelly. This is planned to be completed in May and the station may get online with digital signal in about July or August. However the two things that can help or hurt the situation, one is the weather and number two is if the FCC gets off its rump and approves that application.

When they get their digital channel online they will broadcast only a standard definition signal which is a 480i 4:3 picture. The management is not committed to HDTV because they believe there are so few digital tuners in our market.

KOTV in Tulsa is now broadcasting a digital signal during primetime and it is standard definition only.

If things are to change we must contact the management of KWTV and KOTV to tell them we want our HD. Both KWTV and KOTV are both owned Griffin Communications. Also when you call be nice, they are actually nice people and have been very good to regarding their digital channels.

Any idea what the problem is with the FCC? And why KWTV cannot get the problem resolved?

This is my specualation, when the FCC first did the DTV allotment table they gave both UPN affilaites in Tulsa and OKC the channel number of 42. This would cause major intference if you lived in between both markets. So KAUT applied for a channel change to move its channel from 42 to 40. I don’t know if this has been resolved yet, I don’t know. A take a look at this page from time to time.

    http://www.fcc.gov/mb/video/files/dtvchan.html

I think that because KAUT applied for a channel change that the FCC did not grant anymore DTV construction permits. I am not an engineer or some FCC guru so I could be way off base.

Would it be possible for someone from HDTVOK to create a petition for us to add our names to and send to Griffin about their stance on HD?

CBS is known to have the best HD lineup, but as long as our local stations don’t adopt HD, we are out of luck. Honestly this makes me really angry if they have no intention of transmitting HD and would be willing to get in line for a KWTV/KOTV boycott. I could live without CSI for a while if it would make some waves.

I think something needs to be done. Can we get some official statement from Griffin?

    Any replies?

I doubt contacting CBS would make a difference since they have a strong commitment to HD as witnessed by the quantity of programming they are producing. Also, people in Phoenix have the same problem with their local CBS affiliate and it’s been that way for a couple of years.

I would encourage you to call, write or e-mail KWTV and KOTV to express your desire to receive HD programming from CBS. As HiDefSooner said, be nice as you draw more flies with honey than vinegar. They need to realize there are a large number of people out here ready and waiting to receive their signal.

What has been the affiliate’s reason for not passing the signal in Phoenix?

I think we need to contact the CBS headquarters and let them in on what is going down with KWTV in OKC. It makes me wonder if they want to be represented in this manner (they do have a lot invested in HD after all).
