OETA

What in the world is going on at PBS’s KETA????? There has been nothing but multiplex SD most, if not all, this week. Sometime ago they did do several nights straight in HD, but I had no complaint about that!

OETA passes through whatever PBS sends whether it is HD or multicast SD. OETA has not control over this.

  2. ultimate responds:

I’m not sure that’s correct because I’ve got a friend in San Francisco that says he gets the HD channel every day. In any event, they haven’t had HD on OETA since either Saturday or Sunday, which is highly unusual.

Some stations stopped carrying the HD feed once PBS started charging for it.

  3. mzokc responds:

OETA mentions this nightly on the 6:30 news. The digital channels are used to broadcast the hearings during the day - so no HD since the hearings are on the SD digital channels.

If Friday is SD, it will be the first time the HD Smart Travels will be missed in a full week of programming. However Smart Travels is still in rerun mode, so no loss at this house.

What would be nice is for OETA to start switching the digital to the HD feed every night. Multicast during the day and HD at night. This has been mentioned, but it hasn’t happened yet.

    Gentlemen,
As I write this, "Nature" is on KWBU-DT in Waco, in HD on ch 20.1, 404 on Grande and 804 on Time Warner. "Mary Lou’s Flip Flop Shop" just ended in HD. PBS YOU and PBS KIDS are being broadcast on subchannels 20.2 and 20.3 as they always are.
KWBU always broadcasts HD or widescreen on 20.1. Some shows are repeated throughout the day. "Nature" will be repeated at 10 AM.
When "Nature" came on 18 minutes ago "PBS WIDESCREEN" popped up. A minute later PBS HD logo showed itself upper left. Usually PBS WIDESCREEN appears and you don’t see PBS HD logo during that program.I thought "Nature" was SD widescreen, but I could be wrong. I don’t watch PBS much.
I hope this helps. It is now 7:26 AM.

  5. HiDefSooner responds:

Let me call OETA and find out what is going….

  6. ultimate responds:

Thanks for the explanation. I get KETA’s analog signal, but it’s a bit snowy and I usually watch the digital channels.

Regarding Smart Travels, I only occasionally watch it, but find it to be a good show. It is also carried in reruns on HDNet and on Voom’s Equator HD channel, which is kind of interesting.

KFOR-DT has also been carrying MSNBC’s coverage of the hearings so it’s not just OETA.

    Dennis

  7. higheye responds:

If the hearings are the cause of straight sd programing I would never have known it from them since I choose not to watch if they don’t do the HD. Others may be in a better position to know what KETA -DT does or does not receive from PBS but the PBS web has a full day of HD [tho many shows are actually widescreen SD] every day so I don’t believe what PBS feeds is a problem. Maybe they change transponders and KETA can receive only one. PBS sends all four of the channels
KETA multiplexs every day as well — both DISH and DIRECTV carries PBS KIDS and PBS&YOU daily. So I think KETA is the reason for what ever goes out.

  8. higheye responds:

I tried to edit in an additional thought but it didn’t go in:
If PBS charges extra for HD maybe OETA doesn’t want to pay; however surely dear old PBS is not giving them a four for the price of one deal when they multiplex.

I understand OETA has a limited budget but as mentioned in another post the HD could be carried and one multiplex for the hearings. Maybe they don’t have the right equipment.

  9. Bobarino responds:

Maybe OETA is multicasting as part of their long awaited update for the control room and other infrastructure that is supposed to precede Cox Cable carrying their broadcasting.

  10. higheye responds:

maybe I e-mailed OETA and asked that they update us here or on their own web site — when I opened OETA’s site all mention of digital and HD was no longer there. PBS’s asked for a local station in order to provide a program guide in stead of displaying their HD feed tho I could have found it if I had spent some time. Good ole TITANTV says there are some HD programs on KETA but, then again, they also list a non-existant 34-2.
It being the week end there will not be any response until next week.

  11. mzokc responds:

Because of the lack of the digital control room, OETA has been transmitting either the live national HD feed or the live national multicast feed for months. Since the hearings were on the multicast feed, that’s why we didn’t get the HD feed this last week. Up until the hearings, we have been enjoying about 5 days of HD and 2 days of multicast per week. As soon as the hearings are over I would expect a return to the previous pattern of switching between multicast and HD until the control room is completed.

I was VERY happy to see the smaller OETA logo on the analog channel Saturday night. That should make watching the logo on HD or SD a bit easier.

  12. ultimate responds:

Today they are broadcasting again with a single HD channel. Last week was the first time I can remember that they didn’t show any HD programming, but instead multicast for the entire week.

    Dennis

  13. anonymous responds:

    Guys..

Same here in Tulsa. Off last week, back on today. All I can say is… WHEW! Like to scared me to death.

  14. higheye responds:

I beleive that every oeta station is the same across the board.
