ESPN will letterbox the SD feed of their Thursday night college football games. This can’t come soon enough. It is going to be great to have the cameras framed for 16:9 so we can see further into the secondary. If you have seen any football games on HDNet you will know what I talking about.

I have DirecTVHD DVR and I cannot wait for some football in high def! Check that, NFL Sunday Ticket In High Definition Recording The Games On My DVR. Now that’s what I’m talking about..
Never miss a game? No, I wont. The 16 by 9 should really help to see the entire field like your saying. That will rock.
How is letterboxing the SD feed going to affect things since the games on Thurs are in HD?
The games are in HD 16:9 but the cameras will not be framed for the 4:3 television set audience.
Today the games are produced in a single truck and they takes the 16:9 image and cut out the center for the 4:3 televsion set audience.
By letterboxing the SD screen you can frame the camera for the 16:9 audience. For example today when you are watching a game in 16:9 doing the 4:3 center cut the running back has 5-6 yards of space behind him. Well if you frame the camera for 16:9 you can shift the camera so the running back is on the edge of the 16:9 screen so you can see 5-6 more into the defense.
