While its nice that Cox has added FSN-SW HD I am wondering what exactly have we really gained.
In the past Cox broadcast college football games from FSN-SW HD on Cox Channel 741. Now the only thing that has changed is the channel number and the name on the guide. We still only get two or three games in HD with the remaining 95% or so of the time the channel is noted as “Off Air”. Big deal. Why not simulcast the regular FSN-SW broadcast then prempt that when or if a game is broadcast in HD?
The bottom line is that it simply looks like a marketing ploy which lets Cox say they broadcast FSN-SW HD when in reality nothing has changed.
I hear that cox better get in gear if they want to stay in the HD race. If a couple months past and I don’t see a big increase HD channels. Directv will be hearing from me.
I love the ease, speed and general reliability of cable. I also like not having the initial investment and being able to upgrade equipment for free when new things come out. But I DON’T like Cox’ service, and I DON’T like their lack of HD content. If they don’t get their act together in that area I will surely be switching to Directv in the not-to-distant future. The potentially better prices and the ridiculous number of HD channels, along with other up-to-date features are more important to me than the positives of cable. I don’t particularly want the hassle of switching but I am not at all happy with my Cox service.
Those of us that use Dish have seen them let their lead slip away and no recent attempts to regain; so Directv is beginning to look better and better. I use to have Directv and left them over the HD programing. Nearly every week Directv sends a letter asking me to come back and I have reminded Dish that changing program providers is simply a telepone call away. so they added all those Ice Hocky channels that remain unused most of the time.
Over all I have not been unhappy with Dish and the rain fade you hear of hardly happens.
There is a bit of a hassle in changing services; mostly waiting for the installer to get finished with it. The one Dish sent out told me he had to bury the cable and it would take the rest of the day to dig it. He then went to launch and I dug it myself in less than 30 minutes. Maybe you wont have to have the dish so far from your house and it will take less time. We have so many trees around our house the dish had to be place in the back yard. Time was saved since the main cable had already been put in place by the Directv installer. I had to have two dishes because the sats are so far apart.
good luck
I switched from DirecTV to Dish a little over a year ago but DirecTV has really jumped on the HD bandwagon since their new satellite went live so I am considering going back to them.
I would like to consider Cox but they still have a long ways to go as far as HD is concerned.
My biggest gripe with COX is the dvr sucks. I have had both Directv and Dish since they both became available and have never looked back at Cox. My sister has Cox now and hates it. I am trying to decide if I want to upgrade my Directv receiver to mpeg 4 or not. I don’t like the fact that the HR21’s don’t have an OTA tuner even though Directv has now said they will make a usb OTA tuner available for them later in 08. I love the Dish Dvrs and have since they came out. Dish is getting ready to do something as there is a lot of rearranging going on with the satellite transponders behind the scenes. If they would only get rid of or combine the Voom channels into 3 or 4 channels instead of the current 15. Voom has gone to a repeating 4 hr block on their channels since early November and they are a complete waste of space now.
Yes! I have noticed the shifting of channels on Dish and hope this is a good sign. I really would prefer to stay with them and like their over the air tuner. I do not have the DVR but all the channels come in with higher numbers on the bar than do when I use the television’s tuner. I even get one of the analog channels better.
I know of only a few people personally that like Cox but they subscribe to very few channels and HD is not a big interest to them yet. When my daughter had Cox, and to be fair she did not have digitial channels, I thought the channels were to “snowy” for what I thought they should deliver.
I like several Voom channels but I do agree the rate of repetition is too high. But I also complain that the History channel and National Geographic carry programs that seem to be out of character for what they call themselves. All the discovery family trade shows too much.
Nothing to do with any of the above: looks like oeta has now abandoned its late afternoon HD programs. Another channel of great promise that somewhere died.
Every COX owner should thank directv for doing their “HD RUN”. Competition! I have directv and I have my channel guide set to ONLY DISPLAY HD CHANNELS.. I mean how awesome is that?
There’s still nothing on tv, though. lol.
Two more HD channels in the pipe for Cox. HGTV and FOOD TV are listed as coming soon under the HD tier.
