Dish Network to Offer HD Only Package
Dish Network will offer a new programming package that will only include HD channels. This is according tvpredictions.com. The new package will be available on February 1 will include more than 70 HD channels and will cost $29.99 a month. It will not include every HD channel that Dish Network has to offer so read carefully.

If KOCB would put MSNBC back on their subchannel (34-2) I would snap this offer up in a heartbeat.
But I just can’t do without an all day news channel.
Unfortunately Dish has not offered any subchannels with the local HD channels. Otherwise it sounds like Directv all over again with everything going to be better “by years end.” It would be a matter of necessity that Dish must catch up on HD programing if they want to stay in business. But lets hope that they do something more sooner rather than later.
Right after leaving this site I received a e-newletter from Dish with no mention of such an offer. A search through their web site I found several tempting offers for new subscribers only from “the leader in HD” [that was highlighted in red]. There is an offer for HD plus “100 of the hotest channels.” I don’t know if “hotest” meant the adult channels. [a joke, please].
I heard about this during CES, but held off on posting it. I believe it’s going to happen because it’s been on all the major sites, not just tvpredictions.com, but have been waiting until there was more concrete evidence, such as a press release from Dish…
I the comment I made about the HD plus 100 other channels I neglected to say that this package is 29.95. Do you think this might be the same deal and tvpredictions did not have it quite right?
The package is not available until Feb 1 so there will be no mention on the website or if you call a CSR until next Friday. This also goes for the new $10.00 HD essential package that gives you the hd version of any sd channels you subscribe to along with a few select standalones like HDNet.
Will the $29.95 include the $9.95 “HD access fee” and box rental etc? Any ideas on the upfront cost of having it installed and how long the contract is for? Does the $29.95 include locals or does the box include an OTA antenna input?
An all HD solution for $29.95 may just be enough to get me to actually pay for TV (I’m strictly OTA now) Tack on $5.95 for the DVR fee and I’m set for 2/17/2009. Current DVR doesn’t have a ATSC tuner in it…
Obviously, we don’t know about rumors, but what I’ve heard is that this price doesn’t include the box rental or the DVR fee. I don’t know about the HD access fee for local channels and I would presume that it’ll include their regular boxes with inputs.
Also, in Oklahoma, tax is now charged. A couple of months ago, my bill went from $17.49 to $18.02.
Rumor is right! after reading several cites I don’t understand what it is that Dish is doing. Do I have to pay 29.95 and 10.00? I have Dish everything package and always thought that the HD was already a seperate package I pay 20 for. and I get the local HD channels, since for the wife, I alread pay for locals in sd for the set in the back room. I saw one statment that Directv is adding PBS HD locals. I won’t pay for local HD myself since I get perfectly good signals OTA. I would pay if I could not get them otherwise.
Both are raising prices as I understand it and IF Dish begins increasing the number of channels right away I do mind the 29.99 so much. I never thought they could keep increasing the number of HD channels without a price adjustment.
I noticed on one site [is it site or cite] that SI FI is listed for Feb 1st. I hardly ever watch it because I stay among the HD channels mostly. It is a sad thing to admit but with all those channels coming in from Dish most nights I listen to XM radio while I read.
The 29.99 HD only package will include all HD channels no sd channels no premium movie HD channels unless you subscribe to the them and no sports hd channels( i.e. NBA Tv HD , NHL tv HD). Locals are extra and you need the locals subscription if you want guide info for local OTA hd channels. DVR fee and lease fee extra also. I have had the 722 since it came out and it is a great receiver, storing 50 hrs plus of HD depending on the type of HD (OTA, Mpeg 2, or Mpeg 4) you can also add external USB hard drives to increase storage if you need it.
So it would be
29.99 hd package
5.99 dvr fee
5.99 lease fee
4.99 locals if you want guide info for OTA locals
I believe USA, SCiFI HD may be added this week as part of the new HD packages and Speed HD is supposed to officially launch for speed weeks at Daytona and Dish is already to add it.
If you are being charged tax for sat service you need to complain because there is no Tax on sat services in Oklahoma. I just checked my bill again to make sure, Dish would have put the anti tax channel up for Oklahoma viewers if there were a tax about to be added.
Echostar is also coming out with the TR-50 OTA HD dvr this summer. Basically a 722 without any sat tuners. It won best of show at CES this year.
The HD Only package is available today.

The Dish website says “Over 40 HD channels”. SciFi-HD and USA-HD aren’t on the list (yet). As far as I can tell, the only way to get 70 is by including HD Pay Per View.
All of the HD channels that I watch are included (Discovery, Science, NatGeo, NFL, …).
Local channels are $5/month more, leased receiver fee, DVR fee, …
I don’t think you’ll get a bill of less than $40/month, but it’s still better than $100/month if all you watch is HD.
The number of HD channels always counted the premiums. I noticed that the pay-for-view channels are listed as number “forty.” They are what we have been receiving all along so there are none that are new. I was hoping for better than this. I am guessing that the 29.99 applies to those who elect to have the “HD only” package since I have not heard of a price increase for those that have the other packages. That is not yet! The reduced channel package was missing from the offer.
Last night when I “HD surfed” I found something that was not there in the morning when I tried to find any new HD channels. 16 of the present channels are now listed in the 5000’s ~ begining with 5354 and going to 5300; it is interesting to note that there are skips allowing for additions. These are the same channels found in the 9000’s. If you click on any of them you geta banner that says “This is a subscription channel which has not been purchased. To purchase, please call . . .”
Those are part of the new Dish Latino Max HD package and are coded as vip only. So you have to subscribe to Dish Latino Max and have a Vip receiver to get that block of channels.
Oh. But why not add spanish to the audio for the ones they all ready carry?
Dish “essentials” $10.00 will get you 20 HD channels with Top 100; 21 HD channels with the Top 200 and 24 HD channels with Top 250. For $20 you get 19 more HD channels “the Ultimate package.” Now the golf HD channel is listed in the Essentials section but I cannot seem to get it tho I ran the whole HD schedule two times. VS is still on the list.
If they will add SciFi and USA I will probably switch to the DishHD only package for 29.99. It includes the sd versions of the channels also so you can still get stuff off the sd version for channels like Food that sd and hd channels don’t match. Golf Hd should be in the Top 250 as it still shares time with Vs HD.
