CBS will begin broadcasting its nightly newscast in HD on July 28, 2008

According to Broadcasting & Cable, CBS will officially take Evening News with Katie Couric into the HDTV era Monday, July 28, when it will begin broadcasting in the 1080-line interlace format.

CBS Sets Date for Evening News in HD

No word yet on when Fox and ABC, the last two holdouts will begin broadcasting their nightly newcasts in HD. We also haven’t heard when any local station will begin broadcasting local news in HD.

That’s good news. I have often wondered why the major network evening news shows (which I consider to be the flagship shows so to speak) have not been broadcast in HD before now.

I wonder if KWTV (CBS affiliate) in OKC will start doing its local evening news in HD on that same date or sometime this fall?

The new set they built about a year ago looks like it was created for HD broadcasts and they’ve got “News9HD” (or something like that) on the side of their helicopter, but they haven’t done any local broadcasting in HD as far as I know. I’ve been wondering for a while if that’s their intention but they just haven’t announced it.
