Did the Democrats book all the HD cameras?

I was beginning to worry that none of the Republican Convention would be in HD. Dish doesn’t have a dedicated RNC HD channel, like they had for the Democrats, and the only HD coverage I had seen were in the studios and on the floor from CNN.

At least some of the speeches tonight are in HD, but I’ve also seen SD shots on ABC and other channels; I don’t remember seeing a single shot in Denver that wasn’t in HD. I wonder if the short turnaround between conventions meant fewer HD cameras in Minneapolis.

Dish entered into a contract with the DNC to cover their convention. I wonder if they even bothered to contact the RNC?

I know NBC in Tulsa was HD the last two nights for their one hour of coverage. In Tulsa it appeared only the last night with McCain was HD on CBS because their broadcast of the Palin speech was SD. I missed checking these channels the first night but PBS was definately HD here locally all three nights. I did not bother trying ABC.

  3. Dennis Whiteman responds:

The major speeches were in HD, presumably from a shared pool of cameras. And I suspect the turn around from Denver to St. Paul was just too quick to get all the gear there for the first two days.

Four years ago, HDNet did the production on both conventions and Dish carried both in HD. This time, Dish only had a dedicated HD channel for the Democratic National Convention, though they did have an SD channel for the Republicans.

PBS is awesome. Those people out here with cable that don’t carry OETA are missing one of the best HD channels around.

From what I understand John McCain is aware of HD.

    :)
