KWTV-DT increases power

KWTV-DT is adding a third transmitter cabinet this weekend that will bring their transmitter power up to 62KW and hopefully increase their reliable coverage area to what it should be. Their signal will be offline for a few hours while the change is made.

KWTV’s signal has seemed better here in recent weeks. I still have breakups with almost every show I record on my Dish DVR, but I haven’t had a complete recording fail as I did shortly after the transition.

OETA still breaks up more than it did when they were on the UHF band, but the recordings mostly work.

When you drop your power from 1 million watts down to 62kv you my save a nickel save a dime but in rual OK your picture is NO Good in bad weather! Is the max output 100kv on VHF high band?

Analog KWTV 9 operated with a maximum power of 316,000 watts video.
Digital power needed for same coverage pattern is much less.
I don’t know maximum power allowed on high VHF digital.

KSWO sister KXXV in Waco has virtually the same coverage pattern on ch 26 with 1,000,000 watts as analog ch 25 had with 5,000,000 watts.

Maybe it’ll be better with increased power, but I’m skeptical. I recorded “This Week…” this morning and the end of it was unwatchable due to the breakups. You’d think KOCO-DT could also boost their power at this point to improve their signal.

There has been no change here at all since I posted this item. Course with 50+ mph wind the past week, none of the other OKC stations are coming in all the time either. We haven’t been able to receive KWTV today (Sunday) at all.

Last evening, my Lawton sister reported rock solid KWTV, KFOR, and KETA on Fidelity. Fidelity does not carry KOCO.
KAUZ ch 6 digital is now back on. The trashy ch 6 analog picture is gone.

ggore, How can Ardmore Cable One recieve KFOR and KOCO? They don’t carry KWTV. They are 110 miles from Edmond.
In the old days stations were microwaved from antenna sites to distant cable headends. Does anyone do this anymore?
Lawton Cablevision used to carry 39 and 11 from Dallas. Antennas were at Gainsville, TX and the two Dallas stations were microwaved and relayed at Gene Autry and Duncan to Lawton.
This ended whem 39 changed fromk Ind. to Univision and 11 changed from Ind. to CBS.
When I lived in Elk City, OKC antennas were at Weatherford. Sayre OKC translators weren’t on yet.

KWTV must have done something in the past 24 hours because now they are quite solid, I haven’t seen a dropout at all.

There are still many cable systems that use microwave links. Suddenlink still uses a microwave link southeast of Seiling to send OKC stations on to Woodward, and the same tower feeds other systems of theirs. Dish Network came up with a program that provides commercial-quality receivers cable can use to provide local channels. They are SD only, not available for HD yet.

    Thanks, ggore.
KWTV’s current 62,000 watts may do what the old 316,000 analog did.
I called Fidelity in Lawton recently and got to talk to tech Wayne. And you’ve been so helpful. This cable stuff is really interesting.
My Time Warner is so big, if I have technical questions, I may wind up in India talking to a clueless person. Our old tower north of Waco with antennas and microwave screen is long gone, since we now have but one Dallas station.

I hope KOCO gets their act together so you can carry them.
You’re KFOR ch 27 is still sound, right?

KFOR is OK, still drops out from time to time, especially when the wind howls all day/night, messing up the atmosphere. KOCO is on maybe 75% of the time. Everything else comes in perfectly, even KQOK in Shawnee. The only station we simply cannot carry is KSBI, they are working on new facilities but we haven’t heard any dates of completion or power upgrades. In doing tests at the tower, very often we can receive DTV stations from Tulsa, Wichita, and even UHF 21 from Dallas once.
