KFOR News Goes HD

KFOR local news goes HD tonight! There still will be a mix of SD and HD video probably for a good while but at least the studio camera shots are HD. This is a big hurdle, hats off the engineers! Upgrade done is 24 hours, Wow!

Surprise !! Surprise !! And a smooth cutover in 24 HRS. AWESOME. They’ll fix the audio. I guess that makes them the 1st locally to originate HD. Way to go KFOR !!

This expains all the weird happenings the past week, HD-SD-HD switches for no reason, etc. KFOR’s signal has been really weak since they were knocked off the air during the storm a week ago, probably due to the heat and atmospheric conditions as well. Now if they can do HD syndicated programming, I will be happy.

i imagine there will always be a mix of sd and hd video during the news broadcast especially for out of area events

The only real problem with this is that it makes the commercials look particularly awful since they’re still using the old equipment for them. They need to get that fixed as soon as possible and/or get the capability to show local commercials in HD.

Actually, OETA was the 1st to originate HD local news.
    KFOR comes in 2nd.

Now, who will be the first to broadcast HD shots from their helicopter during tornado season? :-)

Fidelity in Lawton just started carrying KETA 13 in HD fulltime. They’ve carried KETA-TV forever. There is no local PBS affiliate to protect. KFOR is carried in SD 4×3 only on cable ch 4 and is turned off during NBC programming to protect KFDX.
Maybe Fidelity will start carrying KFOR HD with the new HD capability. No WF-Lawton station has the local HD.

Lawton Fidelity just added tons of HD. ABC Family is analog on ch 82 and HD ch 482, TBS is ch 8 and TBS HD is ch 408, Weather Channel is 10 and Weather Channel HD is 410 and so forth. I really like their channel positioning.

I don’t know if Fidelity is digital simulcasting 2-82, as does Charter, Time Warner, and Comcast. I think Cox does digital simulcast below ch 100. How about you, ggore?

Overbuilder Grande in Texas does not simulcast below ch 100, but with all their HD, it’s becoming less important.

I really like Comcast, Time Warner, and Charter’s all digital (thru STB) systems. Analog below ch 100 w/o STB.

Cablevision in NY, CT, and NJ plans to dump all analog in 2010. Room for about 225 more HD channels if they dump the analog. All TV’s will require an STB or be digital cable ready.

does this mean we can watch new episodes of Jeopardy in actual High-Definition?

Just an observation, since they are broadcasting in HD, they can move that ’4′ logo more toward the lower right [instead of closer toward the enter]

Never thought I would see Kelly Ogle in HD well now I can. It actaully looks really good. Impressed with the weather maps as well. Engineers at kfor did a stellar job!

A little FYI on 16 x 9 graphics.. You will notice that the graphics on a 16 x 9 screen will be “4×3 safe” . The camera shots will be framed likewise. Many cable system head ends are doing a center cut downconversion to feed their SD systems. That’s why the weather maps and logos and supers will not be placed at the edge of a 16 x 9 display for quite some time. There are still 4×3 displays that would loose the information if it were placed at the edge of the display. Look for this to be the standard for a few more years till the 4×3 sets are gone. Of course, a 4×3 set could be set to letterbox, but many viewers won’t like the smaller screen.

Cable is required by the FCC to send out an analog version of broadcast stations for another 3 years, the only exception being if the cable system is “full digital” and offers a conversion box to every customer. The Digital Transition isn’t over yet, not for another 3 years, so those logos aren’t going anywhere for quite a while.

    TV-Ace,

KWBU (PBS) in Waco had overbuilder Grande and Time Warner carry analog letterbox on cable ch 4. People screamed. Now KWBU is 4×3 on both systems. Centercut on all locals now.

ggore, TW in Waco has KWTX analog on ch 2. KWTX is digital on ch 2 thru a SA 4240HD STB. I like this method of digital simulcasting.

TW in Wichita Falls, as does Honolulu, and Austin has 2-75 repeated digital in the 100′s. I like the Waco and Comcast method better.

Somethig else interesting. Both TW and Grande dumped some analog channels pryor to the changeover to recover bandwidth. Grande is now 2-71 with 9 blank. They used to be 2-83. Grande is a 870 mhz system.
Time Warner now is 2-75 with 9, 15, and 16 blank. They were 2-78. TW is a 750 mhz system. TW uses digital switching (IPTV) for some digital channels. Grande does not.

FWIW…I happened to notice that KFOR went to SD for the local weather segment during this mornings Today Show around 7.15 AM or so. The regular KFOR morning news & weather show from 5 AM to 7 AM was in HD so I guess they still have some bugs to work out.

The reason for that is because the local WX inserts are taped and played out of the automation server from 7am to 9am which is strictly SD. From 7 to 9 am Rise and Shine is being produced for KAUT which ties up all the HD capabilities..

Syndicated programming in HD is still in the works for KFOR, no real timetable though.

Even though news is in HD the news and program and commercial servers are separate systems..

All the stations in Kansas City shown all their syndicated programming in HD, Jeopardy, Wheel, Ellen, Rachel, 2 1/2 Men, etc, for a year now, and all look fantastic. It costs millions & millions evidently for the satellite receivers, storage hard drives, and playback servers for syndicated programming. It’ll probably be years before the OKC stations get their act together. KFOR is at least making a little progress, as KAUT is now showing HD MyNetwork programming.

Millions and Millions to rebroadcast HD?
I have a $400 PC that can record HD and play it on my TV. Storage drives are cheap these days. The sat receivers may be what the cost is.

Millions and millions may be exaggerated. It is the servers that cost. A 400 dollar PC with a single drive and an HD card does not constitute a broadcast quality server with the flexibility and redundancy needed.

What must the TV station server do that costs so much vs. the cost of a SD server? If everything is done by computer anyways why not just add more storage for HD content and play/rec on HD?

I was exaggerating a little in my comment, but it is the excuse given by stations for not airing any of their syndicated shows in HD. Here is a link to an article in Broadcasting & Cable from 2007 about the challenges of syndicated HD:

Look for the cost to playout HD programming to become feasible fairly soon. Previously, it would take a $250K – $500K server to playout HD. These are dedicated servers with high end encoders and decoders and redundant raid arrays. They also have to work with automation systems. Modern stations are all automated, and there is no one that just sets at a console to push a play button when it is time to roll the program. Playout with a PC and HD card will only work when it can work with the automation systems. It will get there, just takes time…
