David Evans is quoted that the new digital antenna could be installed as early as next week. I would guess it would still be a while after that before they would actually use the new antenna. I am sure more infrastructure work will need to be done because they can start transmitting on the new antenna.

Kevin, thanks for starting a new thread on this very popular topic.
WELL, if the new antenna is not operational, and the old antenna is down, I wonder what they are using for an antenna. This is is VERY VERY curious since their vertical and horizontal signal component strengths have NOT CHANGED !!!!!
HHHHMMmmmm ???????
Rickster
Rickster, if my info is correct, they have 3 antennas: The old analog antenna (currently on the ground), the new digital antenna (about to be placed on top), and the current digital antenna they’re using (side-mounted about 400 feet up the tower).
JW, your are right except that the side mount antennae is 1200 feet up. The problem is that it is mounted on the North side of the tower. Anyone to the south will have reflection problems with the signal as it shoots thru the tower.
The final base piece is now on the ground. I saw that the new base has been pulled out and is in position for the ride up the tower. There have been 3 spider monkeys working at the top all day to prepare for all of the new hardware. Dont know if the new base will go on today. Will check tomorrow.
For those of you interested, I was told there is a camera streaming video of the tower work. I dont know right now if it is pointed on the ground or at the top. Go to KOCO.COM
Just looked at the camera…. they are lifting the NEW base up as we speak…
New base is on, now they are raising the work cage and taking a portable welder to weld in the new base. Hoping to raise digital element around Noon.
we are streaming live now.
Do you have URL? Didn’t see anything on the main site.
Found it

Looks like the antenna is going up!
I am watching this dude climb up the antenna mast right now. Wow!
Antenna is going up!
Looks like it is near the the top now being installed.
Those guys are WAY WAY more brave than I am! Just imagining all that going on 1500 feet in the air makes my skin crawl.
Just came in from outside…
Now being tied down to base. Then they still have to finish hooking electrical to the top marker.
Yes I am so glad I’m sitting at a desk watching. I don’t evn like to be on my roof!
So how fast can they transmit from the new antenna. I want my KOCO!
Helicopter on the live stream…
The shots from the helicopter make it look dramatically higher!
1500 feet up
There is still plumbing to be done.
Is the plan to hook up everything at the top today?
@Aurora5000
Is there a time-line on the “plumbing”? How much can weather delay the project? Are you going to leave the side mounted antenna on the tower as a back up or take it down?
they need to replace a 60 foot section on the main line. They need to remove the splitter that feeds both lines. That should happen mon or tue, The transmitter crew is due in tue for final proof, sweep the main line. If all goes to plan,no problems, we could be on the new transmitter..double power..on the new element maybe wed or thurs in time for the NBA finals. Will have an update for you on tue.keep your fingers crossed…….
Did some line work last night probably removed splitter, rehooked up side mount line and worked on main line. Tramsmitter guys are here also.
No line work done last night, winds too high. Maybe tonite.
So do they have to go back up to the top of the tower? Why are they working “at night”?
They have to turn off the transmitter to to line work. They do it in the early morning hours to have less impact on programming.
As of 3.22 am this morning all line work was completed and on the new transmitter, the main line and the new antennae element.
They are still making adjustments to the 4 cavitys and getting both exciters balanced.
Just in time for Game 1 of the NBA Finals.
So you guys are broadcasting from the new antenna now?
6:53 AM (Thurs)–No KOCO at Taloga Cable
@ggore I don’t think they are up yet. I am not receiving a signal.
I got a strong signal for the first time since conversion to digital this morning at 7:00 ish. I live in downtown (23rd and Shartel) OKC.
8:30 AM, they’re on but very weak. I know it isn’t atmosphere because KWTV-DT 9 is up and very strong.
The VHF channel 9? Maybe KOCO is gradually increasing the power or making adjustments.
AWESOME~~~~INCREDIBLE IMPROVEMENT…………..
In South Norman..
The Vertical signal component is now very strong.
By comparison it was essentially not there before.
The Horizontal component is also stronger but the improvement is not as phenomenal. That is technically to be expected, and perfectly normal.
I will provide Decibel signal strength improvements, later, when time permits.
Thank You CH5. Way to go !!!
