Someday, all video will be shot with HD cameras using a 16x9 aspect ratio, but there's still tons of stuff shot with older equipment. I prefer something like wings to black bars.

Actually, I've been thinking about writing a longer post about how news works in HD. I've only had CNN and CNBC in HD for a few weeks, but I really like the two different approaches they've taken.

When CNN has HD video, it has a ticker and fills its screen with eye candy, similar to what ESPN does; they use wings when they're in Atlanta or other venues without HD video.

CNBC has SD video all the time as near as I can tell, but a very informative stock window with perhaps too much information. I find this similar to ESPN News, though it often has HD video, where they emphasize the information rather than the video.

Different strokes for different folks... :-)

I'm perfectly capable of getting weather and srock reports that I want. I don't need to see other stuff that I don't want/need. Just fill the screen with the picture.
What a concept.

mdeatherage im goin with #1. it is 2:07 am and conan is in brillant hd fashion. KFOR used to show the up all night with leno and bryan in sd only. It may be an NBC thing too but i do believe i remember seein kjrh(tulsa) with conan in hd at 3 am while kfor was in sd. i think kfor is actually payin somebody to do the hd swithc overnight or bought equipment to automatically do it. im bettin the closin cereomy thing was a goof with all the new equip brought in and miss communication. NOW if they can ditch that god awful SD and either get rid of(make hd look better) the subchannel or update it more than just morning time id be happy. didnt nbc buy the weather channel? we'll probably see a change soon.

Interesting that instead of having mostly static bars (technically called Wings) when showing SD content, they actually have potentially useful information such as the day's stock quotes and weather forecasts for major cities in them...

There are two basic possibilities for the HD goodness we've seen at KFOR over the past 17 days:

1. The station has turned over a new leaf, actually cares about presenting a quality HD picture, and will continue to upgrade and invest in HD going forward, or

2. They've had Mike Morgan tied to a chair during his off-air hours for the past two weeks, assuring him that as soon as the Olympics are over, he'll be able to get back to his little red button and pull the premiere of Heroes off the air with live streaming coverage of a stiff breeze in Amarillo.

Given that during the closing ceremony, KFOR dropped the HD picture into its still-crappier-than-anyone-else's SD for twenty minutes for absolutely no discernible reason (no weather maps, no local break-ins, no crawls, nothing—just no HD), I'd set the odds of the above two scenarios at 50-50.

Well, I'm giving up on clearQAM in Vista Media Center. I hooked up an Antenna's Direct 91XG that I'm looking to have installed on a tower (it's currently laying on my living room floor). To my amazement i was able to pickup all of the OKC UHF channels from Stillwater with it just laying on my floor! I'm hoping that once I get it on my tower that I'll be able to pull in ABC and CBS as it is supposed to also pickup high VHF. If not, Antennas Direct is releasing a VHF only box shaped 1ft x 1ft antenna this fall that they say should pick them (and they're including a VHF/UHF combiner with it). Anyone know a place that will install a TV antenna in Stillwater? I've called Star Scan Satellite Systems and they said they don't have the staff for it (though they did send out a kid that said he would do it, but I would prefer that it was through a company for insurance reasons).

Yes, but you can almost feel KFOR salivating at getting back to its crappy SD picture as soon as the torch is extinguished.

NBC doesn't do anything to rein them in, apparently. (NBC has its own issues. Why are the Olympic commercials for "Deal or No Deal" in HD but the show itself is not?)

I thought I had it figured out as I remembered that my TV has a built in QAM tuner. I had it scan for channels and sure enough, there were the 4 HD channels over QAM listed as channels 101-1 (CBS), 101-2 (FOX), 102-1 (ABC), and 102-2 (NBC). Unfortunately, VMC still doesn't like these. The search continues...

Thanks, I seem to be able to pickup 705 KOKH-HD-Fox Oklahoma City, OK HD Broadcast, 710 KWTV-HD-CBS Oklahoma City, OK HD Broadcast, 720 KOCO-HD-ABC Oklahoma City, OK HD Broadcast, and 730 KFOR-HD-NBC Oklahoma City, OK HD Broadcast - however, i'm currently subscribed to the Digital HD Package so i don't know if I'm getting them in the clear or not. I'm switching to the most basic of basic packages on Monday, so I'll find out then I guess.

I'm now having a problem tuning those channels in Vista Media Center TV Pack 2008. I pick them all up through Catalyst Media Center (using ati 650 PCIe), they are showing up as channels 115, 116, 117, and 118 - the guide in Catalyst Media Center doesn't work for some reason. Anyway, you have to add the channels manually in VMC and I can't figure out what it thinks those channel numbers should be. It wants them to be in the format ##-#, which doesn't fit the format I have either from Suddenlink or from Catalyst Media Center as neither have a -#. For example, I've added both 720-1 and 117-1, but I get a no signal error in Vista Media Center with both. I also tried using the broadcast channel number for fox (4.1 as 4-1), but this doesn't work either.

Anyone have any luck adding clear QAM channels to VMC TV Pack?

Cox transmits the local KFOR-DT coverage on channel 84-4 when using a built-in QAM tuner. That got me asking some local cafes and bars to switch to 84-4 to see the Olympics on HD. Most could not due to cable boxes being wired with RF or composite cables to the HD set.

The three restaurants I found that could show HD were 1492 in Midtown OKC and McDonalds in Bricktown. Goldies in Edmond had two sets connected to rabbit ears showing OTA KFOR in HD.

Some locations that could show HD didn't make the effort because of the black bars during commercials and local programming. They set the blurry 4:3 analog station to stretch mode so the 16:9 screen was filled at all times with overweight Olympians. The TV stations need to zoom the analog letterbox content to fill the HD screen and stop this travesty.

I spent several days in Southern California during the Olympics and brought the EyeTV tuner for the laptop Mac. I took a second look when the channel 4 logo was NOT on the screen. Yup, NO local channel logo in LA. Nothing but the NBC logo.

So I have a suggestion for KFOR. Drop the "4" logo and use the equipment generating the channel 4 logo to put a HD weather map on the HD feed when there are tornado warnings in the state.

Above all. I really appreciate the quantity of great HD during the Olympics and pray that no local storms occur for the rest of the coverage! It reminds me of the 24/7 HD coverage we had during the 2002 Winter games on KFOR.

yes it seems the garbage channel has upgraded their equipment very nicely. new logo bottom left of screen in HD finally. Now if they can get their newscast to be in HD first in OKC i just might die. oh yea they really need to fix their sd feed when they show shows not in hd, it looks god awful. SD will be around for much much longer even with hd rollin in. if KFOR can fix that id be happy.

mdeatherage's "Holy crap!" comment:

"Let the world take note: at 11:01 PM on August 15, 2008, KFOR-DT superimposed its own channel logo (in full color) over the HD picture."

I noticed that, too, on Sunday night so maybe, just maybe, there's hope for KFOR yet!

I got u-verse a month ago over here in Midwest City. Smokes cox as far as the value. I wound up spending $50 bucks less a month for better service. Only complaint I have so far is you can only record 2 HD broadcast at once. The advertisement at&t and shows 4 but thats only for SD. So that was a bummer to find out. Also channel 4's HD channel 1004 looks really compressed at times but the other channels looks great. Internet access is smoking. Buts a major upgrade from Cox, especially the dvr and the program guide, much much better.

I also saw that on both Cox Channel 704 and 808 (KFOR-HD) and OTA KFOR-DT channel 4.1 during a cycling pursuit race. It was not apparent later in the day however.
