I’m in the market for a new HD DVR, and was debating between the above 3 services. Dish seems to have the most number of chaannels (20+), many of which are useless (Monsters HD, anyone?), while Direct TV probably has most of what I watch (minus AE HD). All said and done, Direct TV will charge 60 + tax, while Dish will charge 70 + tax but with more HD and SD channels — although I suspect their increased SD coverage will consist of more home shopping channels and not anything substantive. My question is which service provides the better DVR? I’ve heard bad things about Direct TV. Also, where does Suddenlink’s HD DVR fall, and how are their prices and HD coverage? I’m currently using CableCard to get local HD channels (no HDNet for some reason) in Stillwater. Any help would be most appreciated.

I’ve never heard anything bad about the Dish 622. In fact, I think everyone generally loves it – some as much or better than the new TIVO. I’m thinking about picking one up myself (if I can get to a CSR that speaks English). I think you can get one for free right now with the DVR Advantage package, with an 18 month commitment.

I can’t comment on the other DVRs. Try looking at the following forums:

My sister just moved and went with a Cox bundle because she could not get dsl in her new place. The Motorola hd dvr for Cox leaves a lot to be desired. I love my 622 from Dish, the Voom channels are repetitive after a couple of months and A/E HD is not much either. The family mainly uses the 622 now, because I have a Sony DHG HDD250 OTA hd dvr that I use for everyday recordings and I love it. No dvr fees and the guide is very reliable in Tulsa. I have not used it yet but it also works as a cable hd dvr. I have not been able to use the Directv HR20 yet but I hear it is getting better.

I cant speak for Suddenlink, but I will say that Cox service is much better than Dish. The Dish DVR is great. The Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 HD is much better.

I did not like the rain fade with Dish, and Dish did not have local channels in HD. When I left Dish, you could not add an external Hard Drive to the 622 box. In February I added a 750 GB E-SATA hard drive to my 8300 HD and have been trying to fill it up. I am now only at 65%

Before Cox converted all of there channels to digital Dish Network was better, now cox is.
