I don’t know when this happened but when you tune to a non HD channel like 53, you don’t get the bars, everything is in stretch. I am sorry but this bites the big pickle. When I watch TV I don’t want to see a bunch of short fat people. |

Presuming you have a Scientific Atlanta 8300HD… If you press the HD Zoom button on your control does the display say Normal? How is the SA 8300HD set top box [STB] configured? I generally setup ours, using the wizard, for either Upconvert-1 or Fixed. Upconvert-1 displays all HD content in 1080i and SD in 480p (with no black bars). You can also select Upconvert-2 which causes HD content to display in 720p and SD content in 480p (with no black bars). If you have your STB set to 1080i for example and use the Fixed setting then everything is displayed in 1080i including SD. Note that SD will have the black (configurable dark, medium, light) bars on either side of picuture. See this from SA for help setting up the STB using the wizard. http://www.scientificatlanta.com/products/consumers/userguidepdfs/4003114.pdf More downloadable documents from SA here… http://www.scientificatlanta.com/products/consumers/new_explorer8300HD.htm Additional SA 8300HD information here… http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=471859 If you don’t have a SA 8300HD STB then look for similar settings on your specfic STB. |

FWIW, I spent some time yesterday (before the OU-Kansas game) playing with Fixed/Upconvert-1/Upconvert-2 with our HDTV and our SA 8300HD STB. I now have it setup for Fixed (@ 1080i). I found that using Interactive TV [iTv] is much much better now because the HDTV was not having to change resolutions from 1080i/720p to 480 and back again when I wanted to use iTv then back to HDTV. In our case I have an HDMI cable between the STB and our HDTV. In Fixed mode the switch to iTv is smooth as is navigating the menus. Now its still takes a few seconds for iTv to update the information but its just better experience as a whole. The came can be said for OnDemand. As always YMMV… |

Sorry for the double post, My TVs are all set to Auto DVI/HDMI. Just for the fun of it, I switched to Fixed. I did not get the delay switching resolutions, however I did get a much worse picture. It had lots of aliasing. I was playing with one of my older 1080i/p hybrids. It might not be that good at upconverting. |

I had Cox come out and see why I was having this problem. It turned out to be some sort of error related to the HDMI port and it was resolved by using the component cables. |

Just another reason to avoid Cox… I use Dish and OTA for locals. OTA looks much better than cable or satellite – of course. Netflix Blu-rays for movies… |
