I know we talked about this some a few months ago, but I came across this in a News 9 mailer I got recently, and thought it was worth sharing: —————————————– SKYNEWS 9 is the most technologically advanced news helicopter in the country, and it is owned by NEWS 9. SKYNEWS 9 is the only fully high-definition helicopter assembled for television newsgathering. SKYNEWS 9 HD is totally high-definition, from the monitors, to the record decks, to the audio. . . and most importantly — the high-definition camera. The camera features a 1,140mm lens — the longest telephoto lens for electronic newsgathering to date. The lens takes viewers closer to the news than ever. SKYNEWS 9 HD’s max cruising speed is 133 knots or about 152 mph., making it the fastest television helicopter in the state. In addition to having the fastest, most technologically advanced television helicopter, NEWS 9 is the only station in the Oklahoma City market with access to two helicopters for breaking news and weather coverage. SKYNEWS 9 HD Pilot, Mason Dunn said, “It doesn’t get any better than this. I’m excited to pilot the best newsgathering helicopter in the country.” —————————————— The hype over this thing kills me. What’s the point of having an “HD helicopter” when the station can’t even broadcast it’s footage in HD? (Oh yeah, I forgot–John Q. Public is too dumb to know any better.) Maybe when KWTV goes HD, five years from now, they can go back and rebroadcast all of the footage they got this year. Kind of like a “2006′s Greatest Bad Weather Hits in HD” type of deal. |

Historically, it’s good for them. When they do begin doing newscasts in HD, they’ll have the experience of having developed an HD workflow through this helicopter. They can begin doing promos with this HD footage. Even though they’re not doing HD news now, I hope it’s something they want to be the first in this market to do. They could also be a local affiliate for HDNews. KWTV has been last at just about everything having to do with DTV. Maybe this signals a change… |

Don’t get me wrong; I think it’s great that they’ve got an HD-capable chopper. Nothing wrong with that at all. I’m just a little put-off by the marketing of it, which is a tad misleading. This is a station which can’t even transmit Dolby Digital audio (and doesn’t seem to have any interest in doing so, either), and here they are touting their fancy HD helicopter. Just doesn’t seem right. |
